Predicting Crenulate Bay Profiles from Wave Fronts: Numerical Experiments and Empirical Formulae

چکیده

For crenulate-shaped bays, the coastal outline assumes a specific shape related to predominant waves in area: it generally consists of tangential zone downcoast and curved portion upcoast. Many engineers have attempted derive an expression headland bay shapes that emerge when full equilibrium is reached (stable or dynamic). However, even though models for static bays exist, they are merely empirical kind, lacking further insight on relationships between incident wave characteristics beach shape. In addition, commonly believed shoreline profiles tend follow fronts, but this has been never fully verified. paper, we investigate possible correlation front shapes. Numerical experiments performed using MIKE 21 Boussinesq Wave module, generated fronts compared hyperbolic-tangent profile. A thoughtful analysis results revealed single-headland profile translated perpendicularly direction at tip, without any influence period direction. new function called “wave-front-bay-shape equation” obtained, application validation formula case-study Bagnoli coast (south-west Italy) described paper.

Computation of Wave Fronts on a Disk I: Numerical Experiments

This paper discusses numerical experiments of wave front propagation on a flat disk and related results. In particular, notions of extremal rays and wave front caustics are introduced to investigate the dynamic behaviors of wave fronts under repeated reflection. These results are related to earlier work on caustics of ray systems. It is shown that wave fronts require a modified notion of causti...

Empirical Formulae for Electron Density Diagnostics from Hα and Hβ Line Profiles

We present empirical formulae for the electron density vs. line profile widths and shifts developed from precise measurements of hydrogen Balmer series alpha and beta emissions for diagnostics of laser-induced plasma. The formulae are for the Stark width and Stark red shift of the Hα line, as well as for the Stark width and peak separation of the Hβ line and are tested using measurements of Hα ...

Singlarities of Wave Fronts

In this paper, we discuss the recognition problem for Ak-type singularities on wave fronts. We give computable and simple criteria of these singularities, which will play a fundamental role in generalizing the authors’ previous work “the geometry of fronts” for surfaces. The crucial point to prove our criteria for Ak-singularities is to introduce a suitable parametrization of the singularities ...

Optical Wave Fronts

In recent years, the formation of laser beams with specific intensity and phase distributions has attracted considerable attention. The formation of such laser beams has been efficiently achieved by various intracavity mode selection techniques1 or by external conversion of a given laser beam distribution into the desired one. Recently Machavariani et al. presented a new method for efficiently ...

Numerical Methods for Propagating Fronts

In many physical problems, a key aspect is the motion of a propagating front separating two components. As fundamental as this may be, the development of a numerical algorithm to accurately track the moving front is difficult. In this report, we describe some previous theoretical and numerical work. We begin with two examples to motivate the problem, followed by some analytical results. These t...
